"After a great deal of reflection I have decided that quarks are just not funny. They are too small. Most of the time not much happens to a quark, and if something does, it is more likely to be catastrophic than amusing."

Fact Sheets

I have written numerous fact sheets for clients in astronomy, nanotechnology, genomics, to name just a few. Below is an example of one of 13 Tank Tips fact sheets I recently produced for Environment Canada to explain new petroleum storage-tank regulations to owners and operators of such systems. I worked with technical specialists, enforcement officers and government legal experts to ensure that the fact sheets were both accurate and accessible.

Science Education

I have both a passion for and commitment to science education and, in addition to writing and editing, I work as a contractor at the Canada Science and Technology Museum teaching science-fundamentals to children. Science can be compelling, relevant and enormously fun when properly presented. Below are examples of projects I’ve worked on designed to stimulate the interest of young people in science.

Canadian Science and Engineering Internet Hall of Fame.
I created the content architecture, and researched and wrote the biographies of the first seventeen inductees. Since a new biography of Elsie MacGill has just been published by the originator of the project, Dick Doyle, I’ve linked to Elsie MacGill’s Hall of Fame page as my writing sample.

NRC Periodic Table Poster
This NRC poster is now ubiquitous, hanging  in almost every chemistry class in Canada. I researched potential stories for inclusion on the poster, presented them to the client and, once they had decided which stories they wanted to pursue, carried out the researcher interviews. I then wrote the vignettes, ensured that all approvals were in place and delivered the final product to my client. See the vignettes for hydrogen (H), aluminium (Al), lithium (Li), chlorine (Cl), calcium (Ca) and xenon (Xe) for samples of my writing.

Speech Writing

It should be illegal to write a boring speech, whether it’s for the launch of a new vaccine, the opening of a building or an after-banquet presentation on new R&D. I have written speeches for high-level government officials presenting to both general and specialized audiences. My goal is to captivate and inform the audience, and ensure a healthy round of applause for the speaker at the close of the speech. Please contact me to see samples.
